What is an Alb?

The alb is a long white garment common to all liturgical ministers. Lay or Ordained ; it is not limited to priests and seminarians but it can be used by the Instituted Acolytes, Instituted Readers , altar servers, lectors, EMHC and those who are serving the liturgy. It is the symbol of the virtue of Baptism since it is colored white.
There are different styles of the alb but traditionally alb is worn with an amice, and cincture. It is not a "Sutana" or a cassock. It should not be percieved as a clerical garb or a clerical habit, it is a liturgical vestment. Just to clarify things up: There are no particular designs or styles of albs designated for priests, seminarians, altar servers, and other liturgical ministers. The instruction in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal 339 mentioned only "Alb".

Cincture – This is the long cord used for gathering albs at the waist. It holds the loose-fitting type of alb in place and is used to adjust it to the proper length.  The cincture worn by the priest is usually white, although the liturgical color of the day may be used. Altar servers will wear the liturgical color of the day.
