This tradition of giving the hand towel used by the priest during the anointing of the hands at ordination — called a maniturgium or manutergium — to his mother or another special person in his life.
When a priest is ordained, his hands are anointed with the sacred oil of chrism. The maniturgium is a white linen cloth used to wipe these oils from the hands of the newly ordained priest; the priest then presents this cloth to his mother, which will be placed on her body when she dies. Although the use of the maniturgium has been removed from the current Rite of Ordination, many young priests are returning to this pious tradition.
According to pious tradition, the maniturgium is placed around the mother's hands when she is laid to rest in her coffin to present to the Lord at her time of judgment. When the Lord asks her, "I have given you life, what have you given me?" she answers Him, "I have given you my son as a priest."
This practice is a friendly reminder that a mother's prayers, tears, and example are seeds of their children's faith. We thank our mothers for sharing their faith with us!
